The Lijnbaansgracht is named after the rope-walks (lijnbanen in Dutch) of the rope factories, which were located on the outskirts of the city due to their space requirements. The canal has been dugged in 1612. The Lijnbaansgracht ran up to the 19th century along the Schans up to the Muiderpoort. In the 19th century, parts of it were filled in, bridged, or covered.
Where the Residence Le Jardin complex now stands, there used to be the former Klene licorice factory, where mint licorice was produced until 1988. Nowadays, 'Le Jardin' consists of 6 residential floors, 61 homes with storage units, and 48 parking spaces in the underground parking garage.
